What a real play is — and why the account matters more than the click
A play is registered the moment a track is streamed for 30 seconds, but Spotify does not evaluate plays one at a time. It evaluates the pattern around them: does the account that streamed the track listen to anything else, does it follow artists, does it stream at a human cadence, did it exist last month. A shell account created to press play a thousand times fails every one of those checks, which is why bot plays evaporate and why the tracks they land on get looked at. Our real-account definition is five checks applied to the delivering accounts — completeness, age, follow ratio, recent engagement, cross-account history — and it is the same standard we publish for every platform we serve.
The second half of "real" is pace. Real audiences do not produce ten thousand plays in an hour on a track with three followers; they produce a curve. Our delivery is proportional to the package — a 1,000-play order completes within about a day, 100,000 plays are spread across one to two weeks — and to the track's existing traffic where we can see it. That is what makes the play count read as a track travelling rather than a track being pushed.
What "real" cannot mean is a promise about Spotify's decisions. Spotify's User Guidelines prohibit artificial streaming; flagged tracks can be removed, have streams withheld from royalty calculation, and since 2024 distributors can be charged per flagged track. It is the right package for a release-window count, a portfolio track that needs to stop reading as empty, or a catalogue track you want to lift past the point where cold listeners skip it. The Premium tier, from $2.99 per 1,000, delivers plays from listener accounts on paid Spotify subscriptions and paces them more slowly — a few hundred to a couple of thousand a day — because that is how a Premium audience actually accumulates.
Choose Premium when the track already has organic listeners to blend with, when you are pitching a curator who will look at listener quality, or when the release matters enough that the listener profile should match the accounts already streaming your genre. Many artists layer both on the same track as separate orders: standard for the visible count, Premium underneath so the mix stays close to a real audience.
Whichever tier you choose, pair it with a saves order on the same track sized at a few percent of the plays. Save rate is the intent signal Spotify for Artists lists alongside streams and playlist adds, and a play count with no saves behind it is the one pattern that reads as bought even when every play came from a real account.

How do I know the plays come from real accounts?

Are real plays safe from Spotify's artificial-streaming enforcement?

Do real plays count toward the 1,000-stream royalty threshold?
Streams Spotify counts do, and since April 2024 a track needs 1,000 streams in the trailing 12 months before it earns recorded-music royalties. We still describe plays as a promotion cost: free-tier streams pay a fraction of Premium ones, and any stream Spotify later classifies as artificial pays nothing.
What is the difference between real plays and Premium plays?

Will the plays appear in Spotify for Artists?
