What the engagement rate calculator shows

Three numbers in, one rate out, read against accounts of a similar size.

  • Your engagement rate

Average likes plus average comments per post, divided by followers, times 100. It updates as you type.

  • Where it sits

Below, within, above or well above our typical range for your size. The range and the well above line show under the rate.

  • Read against your size

Five size groups by followers, from under 10K to 1M and more. The bigger the account, the lower our range.

  • Nothing to sign in to

No username, no login and no email. The math runs in your browser and the calculator sends your numbers nowhere.

How the engagement rate calculator works

This Instagram engagement rate calculator adds your average likes and average comments per post, divides them by your followers and multiplies by 100: (likes + comments) ÷ followers × 100. Followers, likes and comments show on public profiles and posts, so the rate can be worked out the same way for other accounts too. Saves, shares and reach would give a fuller picture, but only the account owner sees them, in Instagram's insights.

We read your rate against our typical range for your follower count: 3 to 6% under 10K followers, 1.5 to 3% for 10K to 100K, 1 to 2% for 100K to 500K, 0.8 to 1.6% for 500K to 1M, and 0.6 to 1.2% for 1M and more. The ranges fall as accounts grow, so a large account is not held to a small account's numbers. They are our own benchmark, not a published study.

Under the range the result reads Below typical range, inside it Within typical range, and over it Above typical. Past a higher line for each size group (10%, 5%, 3.5%, 3% and 2.5%, from the smallest group to the largest) it reads Well above typical. The verdict says where the rate sits, not why.

Your follower count is on your profile. For the averages, take your last 9 to 12 posts of the same kind (only feed posts, or only Reels), add up the likes and the comments, and divide each total by the number of posts; leave out a post that did far better than the rest. The calculator runs in your browser, sends your numbers nowhere and saves nothing. On TikTok the rate divides by views instead: use our TikTok engagement rate calculator.

How is Instagram engagement rate calculated?

Add the average likes and the average comments of your recent posts, divide by your followers and multiply by 100: (likes + comments) ÷ followers × 100. This Instagram engagement rate calculator does it as you type and shows the rate with one decimal, then places it in our typical range for accounts your size.

What is a good Instagram engagement rate?

It depends on the account's size. Our typical range is 3 to 6% under 10K followers, 1.5 to 3% for 10K to 100K, 1 to 2% for 100K to 500K, 0.8 to 1.6% for 500K to 1M, and 0.6 to 1.2% for 1M and more. Well above typical starts at 10%, 5%, 3.5%, 3% and 2.5% for the same groups. The ranges are our own benchmark, not a published study.

Why divide by followers on Instagram?

Followers, likes and comments show on public profiles and posts, so anyone can work the rate out the same way, for their own account or for another one. Reach would be a fairer divisor, but only the account owner sees it, in Instagram's insights; saves and shares are left out for the same reason. On TikTok our calculator divides by views.

Why is my Instagram engagement low?

The rate divides likes and comments by followers, so it falls when followers grow faster than likes and comments, when recent posts get fewer likes or comments, or when more of your followers do not interact, for example inactive accounts. The calculator shows where your rate sits; it cannot tell which of these is the cause.

Where do I find these numbers?

Your follower count is on your profile. For the averages, open your last 9 to 12 posts of the same kind (only feed posts, or only Reels), add up the likes and the comments, and divide each total by the number of posts. Leave out a post that did far better than the rest, so one post does not set the average.

Does the calculator read my Instagram account?

No. It reads only the three numbers you type. The math runs in your browser: the calculator sends your numbers nowhere and saves nothing. We do not ask for your username, your password or your email.

Can I check someone else's account?

Yes, if you type its numbers: the follower count from its profile, and the likes and comments from its recent public posts. Nothing is looked up for you here. Our Instagram followers counter and fake follower audit look an account up by its username; both are in the free tools on this page.
