What the counter shows

Each lookup returns the numbers on the account's public profile, as our data provider last read them.

  • Followers

The number of accounts that follow the profile. It is the big number in the result.

  • Following and posts

How many accounts the profile follows, and how many posts are on it.

  • Name, picture and badge

The display name, the profile picture, and a blue check when the account carries Instagram's verified badge.

  • Private accounts

The result says when an account is private. Its counts show when our data provider can read them from the profile.

How the count is read

You type a public username, or paste the profile link and we take the username from it. Your browser sends it to our server. You never log in to Instagram, and we never ask for a password.

Our server asks a third-party data provider for the account's public profile and shows the follower, following and post counts it returns.

We keep each profile we fetch in a cache for up to 6 hours, so a count can be behind the profile, most of all on an account that is growing fast. Looking the same account up again within that time can show the same answer.

The tool keeps no history of counts. To see how a number changes, look the account up again later.

What to know about the counterCounter: questions and answers

Answers written from how the lookup works on our server. If your question is not here, our support page shows how to reach our team.

How up to date is the count?

It is the count our data provider read from the public profile. We keep each profile we fetch in a cache for up to 6 hours, so the number can be behind the profile for a while, especially on an account that is growing fast.

Do I need to log in or give a password?

No. You type a public username. The tool never asks you to log in to Instagram or for any password, and it does not ask for your email.

Can I check a private account?

You can look one up. The result marks the account as private and shows the counts our data provider could read from its profile. Its posts stay hidden.

Why does it say the account was not found?

The username may be misspelled, changed or removed. Usernames use letters, numbers, full stops and underscores, with no spaces. You can also paste the profile link. Now and then our data provider cannot read an account that does exist; trying again a little later can help.

Is there a limit on lookups?

We set no daily limit, and the tool is free. When our data provider is busy it can turn lookups away for a moment; the tool then asks you to wait and try again. A security check can appear before a lookup.

What happens to the username I look up?

Our server sends it to our data provider to fetch the public profile, and to a second provider if that lookup fails. It keeps the profile data that comes back, such as the name, picture link, bio and counts, in its cache for up to 6 hours under that username, and logs the request with your IP address.

Why check a follower count?

To size up an influencer before a partnership, to keep an eye on a competitor, or to compare your own account with similar ones.

Growing your own account?

Our Instagram followers packages ask for your public username, never your password. Sizes and prices are on the page.
